What is Asthma?

The technical description is a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. It usually results from an allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity.

Basically, when the airways react, the muscles around them tighten. This narrows the airways, which then causes less air to flow into the lungs. The swelling also can worsen which makes the airways even narrower. Cells in the airways might make more mucus than usual. Mucus is a sticky, thick liquid that can further narrow the airways.

What causes Asthma?

It is not fully known what causes asthma. There are some contributing factors believed to enhance the symptoms. An inherited tendency to develop allergies is one. Furthermore, parents who have asthma may contribute. Certain respiratory infections during childhood. Lastly, having contact with some airborne allergens or exposure to some viral infections in infancy or in early childhood when the immune system is developing.
